March 2022
My Bike Mechanic-ing for 2021 came to an abrupt end on 18 December and I dont really remember the event.
Apparently I was checking the gears on a customers bike and face planted a stationary van in the car park. The bike had European style reversed brake levers, so I wonder if I pulled hard on the wrong lever at the last moment and went over the bars.
I'm told I was fully conscious but bleeding like a pig, then slowly started to zone out, never losing consciousness, but losing my short term memory. I was asking my wife the same question every 2 minutes on the way to ED!
The diagnosis was concussion/ trans-global amnesia and I spent a few days in Waitakere Hospital.
I completely lost most of the day of the accident and even 2 months later I have to think of the names of things and take it easy with stuff that uses my brain, eg keep the screen time down. If I don't look after myself I get really tired and headaches begin
The Doctors said I will recover but I am learning these things can take a while; its a process
I am back on the job and can stay functional if look after myself by watching the warning signs like tiredness and headaches and being patient with myself. Now I've experienced long term concussion I wouldn't wish it on anyone; the hardest part is you look normal on the outside, while the brain does odd things!
I also proved you can time travel on a bike...for the first month all the events since the accident seemed like yesterday...isn't the Human Brain weird?
So happy 2022 everyone!
The Bike Studios should be starting up again in Autumn 2022 once we get past the Omicron hurdle.
